We all know that there’s strength in numbers, so it’s with great strength that we’ll work and walk toward putting an end to the suffering caused by breast cancer. We each have our reasons for participating – – whether it’s a personal fight with breast cancer, the struggle or loss of a loved one, or a deep commitment to the cause.
This is my fourth year in a row participating and I am proud to be walking with my fiance, Mark Kaplan. This is Mark’s second year in a row participating. We are walking for my Mom, Joan Coolbaugh. My Mom did not have breast cancer, but was born with the BRCA1 gene mutation. This ultimately led to her fighting a two year long battle with ovarian cancer until she passed away on September 18, 2016. The strength and courage my Mom met her illness with was inspirational. Until her very last breath, she laughed and joked with her family and the wonderful team at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital. Every single person that shares stories about my Mom remembers her being happy and laughing, always caring more about her family than herself. She joined two other courageous woman whose lives passed too soon from cancer, her Mom, Sophie and her sister, Dolores.
